THE BOOK OF ACTS |
John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now. -- 1:5 There is salvation in no one else; for there is no other name under heaven that has been given among men by which we must be saved. -- 4:10-12 We must obey God rather than men. -- 5:29 The Most High does not dwell in houses made by human hands -- 7:48 Behold, I see the heavens opened up and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God. -- 7:56 What God has cleansed, no longer consider unholy. -- 10:10-15 God is not one to show partiality,
but in every nation the man who fears Him and does what is right is welcome
to Him.
The disciples were first called Christians in Antioch. -- 11:26 He said, "Sirs, what must I do to be saved?" They said, "Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and your household." -- 16:30-31 He is not far from each one of us; for in Him we live and move and have our being. -- 17:27-28 I do not consider my life of any account as dear to myself, so that I may finish my course and the ministry which I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify solemnly of the gospel of the grace of God. -- 20:24 I also do my best to maintain always a blameless conscience both before God and before men. -- 24:14-16 The Messiah was to suffer,
and that by reason of His resurrection from the dead He would be the first
to proclaim light both to the Jewish people and to the Gentiles.
"Therefore let it be known to you that this salvation of God has been sent to the Gentiles; they will also listen." -- 28:28

THE ASCENSION "John baptized with water,
but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now."
So when they had come together, they were asking Him, saying, "Lord, is
it at this time You are restoring the kingdom to Israel?" He said
to them, "It is not for you to know times or epochs which the Father has
fixed by His own authority; but you will receive power when the Holy Spirit
has come upon you; and you shall be My witnesses both
PENTECOST When the day of Pentecost
had come, they were all together in one place. And suddenly there
came from heaven a noise like a violent rushing wind, and it filled the
whole house where they were sitting. And there appeared to them tongues
as of fire distributing themselves, and they rested on each one of them.
JESUS' DEATH AND RESURRECTION This Man, delivered over by
the predetermined plan and foreknowledge of God, you nailed to a cross
by the hands of godless men and put Him to death. But God raised
Him up again, putting an end to the agony of death, since it was impossible
for Him to be held in its power. -- 2:23-24
REPENTANCE, FORGIVENESS, AND THE HOLY SPIRIT Repent, and each of you be
baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins;
and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. For the promise
is for you and your children and for all who are far off, as many as the
Lord our God will call to Himself. -- 2:38-39
ALL THINGS IN COMMON They were continually devoting
themselves to the apostles' teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking
of bread and to prayer. Everyone kept feeling a sense of awe; and
many wonders and signs were taking place through the apostles. And
all those who had believed were together and had all things in common;
and they began selling their property and possessions and were sharing
them with all, as anyone might have need.
THE RESTORATION OF ALL THINGS And now, brethren, I know
that you acted in ignorance, just as your rulers did also. But the
things which God announced beforehand by the mouth of all the prophets,
that His Christ
THE NAME OF JESUS Let it be known to all of
you and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ the
Nazarene, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead -- by this
Name this man stands here before you in good health. He is the Stone
which was rejected by you, the builders, but which became the chief corner
stone. And there is salvation in no one else; for there is no other
name under heaven that has been given among men by which we must be saved.
-- 4:10-12
TO OBEY GOD OR MAN When they had summoned them,
they commanded them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus.
But Peter and John answered and said to them, "Whether it is right in the
sight of God to give heed to you rather than to God, you be the judge;
WHO KILLED JESUS? For truly in this city there
were gathered together against Your holy servant Jesus, whom You anointed,
both Herod and Pontius Pilate, along with the Gentiles and the peoples
of Israel,
UNITY IN THE HOLY SPIRIT And when they had prayed,
the place where they had gathered together was shaken, and they were all
filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak the word of God with boldness.
And the congregation of those who believed were of one heart and soul;
and not one of them claimed that anything belonging to him was his own,
but all things were common property to them. And with great power
the apostles were giving testimony to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus,
and abundant grace was upon them all. For there was not a needy person
among them, for all who were owners of land or houses would sell them and
bring the proceeds of the sales and lay them at the apostles' feet, and
they would be distributed to each as any had need. -- 4:31-35
OBEY GOD OR MAN? The high priest questioned
them, saying, "We gave you strict orders not to continue teaching in this
name, and yet, you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching and intend
to bring this man's blood upon us." But Peter and the apostles answered,
"We must obey God rather than men. The God of our fathers raised
up Jesus, whom you had put to death by hanging Him on a cross. He
is the one whom God exalted to His right hand as a Prince and a Savior,
to grant repentance to Israel, and forgiveness of sins. And we are
witnesses of these things; and so is the Holy Spirit, whom God has given
to those who obey
FIGHTING AGAINST GOD In the present case, I say
to you, stay away from these men and let them alone, for if this plan or
action is of men, it will be overthrown; but if it is of God, you will
not be able to overthrow them; or else you may even be found fighting against
God."
PETER AND THE UNCLEAN ANIMALS He became hungry and was desiring
to eat; but while they were making preparations, he fell into a trance;
and he saw the sky opened up, and an object like a great sheet coming down,
lowered by four corners to the ground, and there were in it all kinds of
four-footed animals and crawling creatures of the earth and birds of the
air. A voice came to him, "Get up, Peter, kill and eat!" But
Peter said, "By no means, Lord, for I have never eaten anything unholy
and unclean." Again a voice came to him a second time, "What God
has cleansed, no longer consider unholy." -- 10:10-15
PETER AND THE GENTILES Opening his mouth, Peter said:
"I most certainly understand now that God is not one to show partiality,
but in every nation the man who fears Him and does what is right is welcome
to Him. The word which He sent to the sons of Israel, preaching peace
through Jesus Christ (He is Lord of all) -- you yourselves know the thing
which took place throughout all Judea, starting from Galilee, after the
baptism which John proclaimed. You know of Jesus of Nazareth, how
God anointed Him with the Holy Spirit and with power, and how He went about
doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was
with Him. We are witnesses of all the things He did both in the and
of the Jews and in Jerusalem. They also put Him to death by hanging Him
on a cross. God raised Him up on the third day and granted that He
become visible, not to all the people, but to witnesses who were chosen
beforehand by God, that is, to us who ate and drank with Him after He arose
from the dead. And He ordered us to preach to the people, and solemnly
to testify that this is the One who has been appointed by God as Judge
of the living and the dead. Of Him all the prophets bear witness
that through His name everyone who believes in Him receives
REQUIREMENTS OF GENTILE BELIEVERS God, who knows the heart, testified to them giving them the Holy Spirit, just as He also did to us; and He made no distinction between us and them, cleansing their hearts by faith. Now therefore why do you put God to the test by placing upon the neck of the disciples a yoke which neither our fathers nor we have been able to bear? But we believe that we are saved through the grace of the Lord Jesus, in the same way as they also are. -- 15:8-11 THE UNKNOWN GOD So he was reasoning in the
synagogue with the Jews and the God-fearing Gentiles, and in the market
place every day with those who happened to be present. And also some
of the Epicurean and Stoic philosophers were conversing with him. Some
were saying, "What would this idle babbler wish to say?" Others, "He seems
to be a proclaimer of strange deities," -- because he was preaching Jesus
and the resurrection. And they took him and brought him to the Areopagus,
saying, "May we know what this new teaching is which you are proclaiming?
THE RECEIVING OF THE HOLY SPIRIT He said to them, "Did you
receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?" And they said to him,
"No, we have not even heard whether there is a Holy Spirit." And
he said, "Into what then were you baptized?" And they said, "Into
John's baptism." Paul said, "John baptized with the baptism of repentance,
telling the people to believe in Him who was coming after him, that is,
in Jesus." When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of
the Lord Jesus. And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy
Spirit came on them, and they began speaking
THE DEFEAT OF THE MAGICIANS But also some of the Jewish
exorcists, who went from place to place, attempted to name over those who
had the evil spirits the name of the Lord Jesus, saying, "I adjure you
by Jesus whom Paul preaches." Seven sons of one Sceva, a Jewish chief
priest, were doing this. And the evil spirit answered and said to
them, "I recognize Jesus, and I know about Paul, but who are you?"
PAUL'S CONFESSION Then Paul answered, "What
are you doing, weeping and breaking my heart? For I am ready not only to
be bound, but even to die at Jerusalem for the name of the Lord Jesus."
And since he would not be persuaded, we fell silent, remarking, "The will
of the Lord be done!" -- 21:13-14
PAUL'S DEFENSE Paul began crying out in the
Council, "Brethren, I am a Pharisee, a son of Pharisees; I am on trial
for the hope and resurrection of the dead!" As he said this, there
occurred a dissension between the Pharisees and Sadducees, and the assembly
was divided. For the Sadducees say that there is no resurrection,
nor an angel, nor a spirit, but the Pharisees
PAUL'S CONFESSION But this I admit to you, that
according to the Way which they call a sect I do serve the God of our fathers,
believing everything that is in accordance with the Law and that is written
in the Prophets; having a hope in God, which these men cherish themselves,
that there shall certainly be a resurrection of both the righteous and
the wicked. In view of this, I also do my best to maintain always
a blameless conscience both before God and before men. -- 24:14-16
THE DAMASCUS ROAD As I was journeying to Damascus
with the authority and commission of the chief priests, at midday, O King,
I saw on the way a light from heaven, brighter than the sun, shining all
around me and those who were journeying with me. And when we had
all fallen to the ground, I heard a voice saying to me in the Hebrew dialect,
"Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting Me? It is hard for you to kick
against the goads." And I said, "Who are You, Lord?" And the Lord
said, "I am Jesus whom you are persecuting. But get up and stand
on your feet; for this purpose I have appeared to you, to appoint you a
minister and a witness not only to the things which you have seen, but
also to the things in which I will appear to you; rescuing you from the
Jewish people and from the Gentiles, to whom I am sending you,
PAUL'S CONFESSION So, having obtained help from
God, I stand to this day testifying both to small and great, stating nothing
but what the Prophets and Moses said was going to take place; that the
Christ was to suffer, and that by reason of His resurrection from the dead
He would be the first to proclaim light both to the Jewish people and to
the Gentiles. -- 26:22-23
PAUL BEFORE AGRIPPA "King Agrippa, do you believe
the Prophets? I know that you do."
