THE BOOK OF ROMANS |
For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. -- 1:16 "But the righteous man shall live by faith." -- 1:17 For they exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. -- 1:25 For there is no partiality with God. -- 2:11 Let God be found true, though every man be found a liar. -- 3:4 For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. -- 3:23 Therefore, having been justified
by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.
But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. -- 5:1-8 Even so consider yourselves to be dead to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus. -- 6:11 For sin shall not be master over you, for you are not under law but under grace. -- 6:14 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. -- 6:23 The willing is present in me, but the doing of the good is not. -- 7:18 Who will set me free from the body of this death? Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord! -- 7:24-25 Therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. -- 8:1 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and of death. -- 8:2 For those who are according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who are according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit. -- 8:1-5 However, you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. But if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Him. -- 8:9 For if you are living according to the flesh, you must die; but if by the Spirit you are putting to death the deeds of the body, you will live. For all who are being led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God. -- 8:13-14 For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory that is to be revealed to us. -- 8:18 For we know that the whole creation groans and suffers the pains of childbirth together until now. -- 8:22 We do not know how to pray as we should, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. -- 8:26 And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose. -- 8:28 For those whom He foreknew, He also predestined to become conformed to the image of His Son. -- 8:29 If God is for us, who is against us? -- 8:31 He who did not spare His own
Son, but delivered Him over for us all, how will He not also with Him
But in all these things we overwhelmingly conquer through Him who loved us. -- 8:37 For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. -- 8:38-39 They are not all Israel who are descended from Israel. -- 9:6 Who are you, O man, who answers back to God? -- 9:20 Brethren, my heart's desire and my prayer to God for them is for their salvation. -- 10:1 They have a zeal for God,
but not in accordance with knowledge.
For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes. -- 10:4 If you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved; for with the heart a person believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation. -- 10:9-10 Whoever calls on the Name of the Lord will be saved." -- 10:13 How will they believe in Him whom they have not heard? -- 10:14 Faith comes from hearing,
and hearing by the word of Christ.
I say then, God has not rejected His people, has He? May it never be! For I too am an Israelite, a descendant of Abraham, of the tribe of Benjamin. God has not rejected His people whom He foreknew. -- 11:1-2 A partial hardening has happened to Israel until the fullness of the Gentiles has come in; and so all Israel will be saved. -- 11:25-26 The gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable. -- 11:29 Oh, the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgments and unfathomable His ways! -- 11:33 For from Him and through Him and to Him are all things. To Him be the glory forever. Amen. -- 11:36 Therefore I urge you, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of worship. -- 12:1 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect. -- 12:2 God has allotted to each a measure of faith. -- 12:3 Be devoted to one another in brotherly love; give preference to one another in honor. -- 12:10 Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse. -- 12:14 Rejoice with those who rejoice,
and weep with those who weep.
Never pay back evil for evil to anyone. -- 12:17 If possible, so far as it
depends on you, be at peace with all men.
Never take your own revenge, beloved, but leave room for the wrath of God, for it is written, "Vengeance is mine, I will repay," says the Lord. -- 12:19 Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good. -- 12:21 Every person is to be in subjection to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those which exist are established by God. -- 13:1 Owe nothing to anyone except
to love one another; for he who loves his neighbor has fulfilled the law.
Love does no wrong to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfillment of the law. -- 13:10 But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh in regard to its lusts. -- 13:14 Now accept the one who is weak in faith, but not for the purpose of passing judgment on his opinions. -- 14:1 For not one of us lives for
himself, and not one dies for himself;
Nothing is unclean in itself; but to him who thinks anything to be unclean, to him it is unclean. 14:14 The kingdom of God is not eating and drinking, but righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit. -- 14:17 Happy is he who does not condemn himself in what he approves. -- 14:22 Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that you will abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. -- 15:13 To the only wise God, through
Jesus Christ, be the glory forever. Amen. -- 16:27

THE POWER OF THE GOSPEL For I am not ashamed of the
gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes,
to the Jew first and also to the Greek. For in it the righteousness
of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, "But the righteous
man shall live by faith." For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven
against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men who suppress the truth
in unrighteousness, because that which is known about God is evident within
them; for God made it evident to them. For since the creation of
the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature,
have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so
that they are without excuse. -- 1:16-20
PROFESSING TO BE WISE For even though they knew
God, they did not honor Him as God or give thanks, but they became futile
in their speculations, and their foolish heart was darkened. Professing
to be wise, they became fools, and exchanged the glory of the incorruptible
God for an image in the form of corruptible man and of birds and four-footed
animals and crawling creatures. Therefore God gave them over in the
lusts of their hearts to impurity, so that their bodies would be dishonored
among them. For they exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped
and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever.
Amen. -- 1:21-25
NO PARTIALITY WITH GOD There will be tribulation
and distress for every soul of man who does evil, of the Jew first and
also of the Greek, but glory and honor and peace to everyone who does good,
to the Jew first and also to the Greek. For there is no partiality
with God. For all who have sinned without the Law will also perish
without the Law, and all who have sinned under the Law will be judged by
the Law; for it is not the hearers of the Law who are just before God,
but the doers of the Law will be justified. -- 2:9-13
A TRUE JEW For he is not a Jew who is
one outwardly, nor is circumcision that which is outward in the flesh.
But he is a Jew who is one inwardly; and circumcision is that which is
of the heart, by the Spirit, not by the letter; and his praise is not from
men, but from God. -- 2:28-29
WHAT ADVANTAGE HAS THE JEW? Then what advantage has the
Jew? Or what is the benefit of circumcision? Great in every respect.
First of all, that they were entrusted with the oracles of God. What
then? If some did not believe, their unbelief will not nullify the faithfulness
of God, will it? May it never be! Rather, let God be found true,
though every man be found a liar, as it is written, "That you may be justified
in your words, and prevail when you are judged." -- 3:1-4
NONE RIGHTEOUS As it is written, "There is
none righteous, not even one; there is none who understands, there is none
who seeks for God; all have turned aside, together they have become useless;
there is none who does good, there is not even one." -- 3:10-12
ALL HAVE SINNED By the works of the Law no
flesh will be justified in His sight; for through the Law comes the knowledge
of sin. But now apart from the Law the righteousness of God has been
manifested, being witnessed by the Law and the Prophets, even the righteousness
of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all those who believe; for there
is no distinction; for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
being justified as a gift by His grace through the redemption which is
in Christ Jesus; whom God displayed publicly as a propitiation in His blood
through faith. -- 3:20-25
CHRIST DIED FOR US Therefore, having been justified
by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through
whom also we have obtained our introduction by faith into this grace in
which we stand; and we exult in hope of the glory of God. And not
only this, but we also exult in our tribulations, knowing that tribulation
brings about perseverance; and perseverance, proven character; and proven
character, hope; and hope does not disappoint, because the love of God
has been poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given
to us. For while we were still helpless, at the right time Christ
died for the ungodly. For one will hardly die for a righteous man;
though perhaps for the good man someone would dare even to die. But
God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners,
Christ died for us. -- 5:1-8
JUSTIFICATION THROUGH JESUS For if by the transgression
of the one, death reigned through the one, much more those who receive
the abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness will reign in life
through the One, Jesus Christ. So then as through one transgression
there resulted condemnation to all men, even so through one act
SIN AND GRACE What shall we say then? Are
we to continue in sin so that grace may increase? May it never be!
How shall we who died to sin still live in it? Or do you not know
that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus have been baptized
into His death?
WHO WILL SET ME FREE? For I know that nothing good
dwells in me, that is, in my flesh; for the willing is present in me, but
the doing of the good is not.
NO CONDEMNATION Therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and of death. For what the Law could not do, weak as it was through the flesh, God did: sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and as an offering for sin, He condemned sin in the flesh, so that the requirement of the Law might be fulfilled in us, who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. For those who are according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who are according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit. -- 8:1-5 FELLOW HEIRS The Spirit Himself testifies
with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, heirs also,
heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him
so that we may also be glorified with Him. For I consider that the
sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the
glory that is
GOD AT WORK IN ALL THINGS In the same way the Spirit
also helps our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we should, but
the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words;
and He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because
He intercedes for the saints according to the will of God. And we
know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who
love God, to those who are called according to His purpose. For those
whom He foreknew, He also predestined to become conformed to the image
of His Son, so that He would be the firstborn among many brethren; and
these whom He predestined, He also called; and these whom He called, He
also justified; and these whom He justified, He also glorified. What
then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who is against us?
He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him over for us all, how
will He not also with Him
THE ISRAELITES I am telling the truth in
Christ, I am not lying, my conscience testifies with me in the Holy Spirit,
that I have great sorrow and unceasing grief in my heart. For I could
wish that I myself were accursed, separated from Christ for the sake of
my brethren, my kinsmen according to the flesh, who are Israelites, to
whom belongs the adoption as sons, and the glory and the covenants and
the giving of the Law and the temple service and the promises, whose are
the fathers, and from whom is the Christ according to the flesh, who is
over all, God blessed forever. Amen. -- 9:1-5
THE POTTER AND THE CLAY So then He has mercy on whom
He desires, and He hardens whom He desires. You will say to me then,
"Why does He still find fault? For who resists His will?" On the
contrary, who are you, O man, who answers back to God? The thing molded
will not say to the molder, "Why did you make me like this," will it?
Or does not the potter have a right over the clay, to make from the same
lump one vessel for honorable use and another for common use? What
if God, although willing to demonstrate His wrath and to make His power
known, endured with much patience vessels of wrath prepared for destruction?
And He did so to make known the riches of His glory upon vessels of mercy,
which He prepared beforehand for glory, -- 9:18-23
SALVATION BY FAITH But what does it say? "The
word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart" -- that is, the word
of faith which we are preaching, that if you confess with your mouth Jesus
as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you
will be saved; for with the heart a person believes, resulting in righteousness,
and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation. For the
Scripture says, "Whoever believes in Him will not be disappointed."
For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; for the same Lord is
Lord of all, abounding in riches for all who call on Him; for "Whoever
calls on the Name of the Lord will be saved." -- 10:8-13
FAITH COMES BY HEARING How then will they call on
Him in whom they have not believed? How will they believe in Him whom they
have not heard? And how will they hear without a preacher? How will
they preach unless they are sent? Just as it is written, "How beautiful
are the feet of those who bring good news of good things!" However,
they did not all heed the good news; for Isaiah says, "Lord, who has believed
our report?" So faith comes from hearing, and hearing by the word
of Christ. -- 10:14-17
A REMNANT BY GRACE In the same way then, there has also come to be at the present time a remnant according to God's gracious choice. But if it is by grace, it is no longer on the basis of works, otherwise grace is no longer grace. -- 11:5-6 I say then, they did not stumble so as to fall, did they? May it never be! But by their transgression salvation has come to the Gentiles, to make them jealous. Now if their transgression is riches for the world and their failure is riches for the Gentiles, how much more will their fulfillment be! -- 11:11-12 For if their rejection is the reconciliation of the world, what will their acceptance be but life from the dead? If the first piece of dough is holy, the lump is also; and if the root is holy, the branches are too. But if some of the branches were broken off, and you, being a wild olive, were grafted in among them and became partaker with them of the [8]rich root of the olive tree, do not be arrogant toward the branches; but if you are arrogant, remember that it is not you who supports the root, but the root supports you. -- 11:15-18 For if you were cut off from what is by nature a wild olive tree, and were grafted contrary to nature into a cultivated olive tree, how much more will these who are the natural branches be grafted into their own olive tree? For I do not want you, brethren, to be uninformed of this mystery -- so that you will not be wise in your own estimation -- that a partial hardening has happened to Israel until the fullness of the Gentiles has come in; and so all Israel will be saved. -- 11:24-26 From the standpoint of the
gospel they are enemies for your sake, but from the standpoint of God's
choice they are beloved for the sake of the fathers; for the gifts and
the calling of God are irrevocable. -- 11:28-29
SPIRITUAL GIFTS For through the grace given
to me I say to everyone among you not to think more highly of himself than
he ought to think; but to think so as to have sound judgment, as God has
allotted to each a measure of faith. For just as we have many members
in one body and all the members do not have the same function, so we, who
are many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another.
Since we have gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, each
of us is to exercise them accordingly: if prophecy, according to the proportion
of his faith; if service, in his serving; or he who teaches, in his teaching;
or he who exhorts, in his exhortation; he who gives, with liberality; he
who leads, with diligence; he who shows mercy, with cheerfulness.
Let love be without hypocrisy. Abhor what is evil; cling to what is good.
Be devoted to one another in brotherly love; give preference to one another
in honor; not lagging behind in diligence, fervent in spirit, serving the
Lord;
RESPECT FOR GOVERNMENT Every person is to be in subjection
to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God,
and those which exist are established by God. Therefore whoever resists
authority has opposed the ordinance of God; and they who have opposed will
receive condemnation upon themselves. For rulers are not a cause
of fear for good behavior, but for evil. Do you want to have no fear of
authority? Do what is good and you will have praise from the same; for
it is a minister of God to you for good. But if you do what is evil, be
afraid; for it does not bear the
PUT ON THE LIGHT Do this, knowing the time,
that it is already the hour for you to awaken from sleep; for now salvation
is nearer to us than when we believed. The night is almost gone,
and the day is near. Therefore let us lay aside the deeds of darkness and
put on the armor of light. Let us behave properly as in the day,
not in carousing and drunkenness, not in sexual promiscuity and sensuality,
not in strife and jealousy. But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and
make no provision for the flesh in regard to its lusts. -- 13:10-14
STUMBLING BLOCKS So then each one of us will
give an account of himself to God.
BENEDICTION Now to Him who is able to
establish you according to my gospel and the preaching of Jesus Christ,
according to the revelation of the mystery which has been kept secret for
long ages past, but now is manifested, and by the Scriptures of the prophets,
according to the commandment of the eternal God, has been made known to
all the nations, leading to obedience of faith;
